Hyperthyroidism Increases Fracture Risk?
Subclinical thyroid dysfunction and the risk for fractures: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
QUESTION: is subclinical hyperthyroidism associated with an increased fracture risk?METHODS: a systematic review was performed.
RESULTS: there where 50,245 participants with 1966 hip and 3281 nonspine fractures in the pooled studies. People with subclinical hyperthyroidism had a 38% increased risk for hip fractures and a 20% increased risk for nonspine fractures.
CONCLUSION: there was a large heterogeneity in the studies evaluated so the conclusions are preliminary. However, this analysis suggests that subclinical hyperthyroidism is associated with an increased fracture risk.
